If you thought Labradors and Pomeranians had cornered the cute-dog market, think again. There’s a new tail-wagging tale in town — and it’s all about India’s very own homegrown hounds.

HarperCollins Children’s Books India has just released The Little Book of Indian Dogs, a picture book that’s as heartwarming as it is eye-opening. Written by Anusha Ramanathan and illustrated by Chandrima Chatterjee, the book is a gentle yet powerful love letter to India’s indigenous dog breeds — many of which you might not have heard of, but will definitely want to cuddle.

At the center of the story are Runi and her Baba, who are on a mission: to welcome a new dog into their family. But how do you choose between the majestic Rampur Greyhound, the sleek Chippiparai, the clever Jonangi, or the fiercely loyal Kombai? With every breed they learn about, Runi’s heart grows a little bigger, and so does ours.

“This charming book introduces you to many, many more breeds than you thought existed. And these are our very own Indian breeds – names you might never have heard of!” says Tina Narang, Executive Publisher at HarperCollins Children’s Books India. “Pick up The Little Book of Indian Dogs and find a dog to love from the amazing breeds featured here.”

This is no ordinary picture book. It’s part story, part dog encyclopedia, and completely adorable. Blending fiction with fascinating facts, The Little Book of Indian Dogs gently guides children (and grown-ups!) through India’s forgotten four-legged history, one wag at a time. The book doesn’t just bark about breeds — it hums with a deeper message about compassion, responsibility, and the joy of adopting.

Anusha Ramanathan, the author, grew up in a home that always had more paws than people. With a father who was a walking, talking canine compendium, Anusha’s love for dogs runs generations deep. Now a lawyer and picture book collector based in Hyderabad, she’s passing down her puppy love to young readers.

Meanwhile, illustrator Chandrima Chatterjee makes magic with her pen, bringing each breed to life with warmth and whimsy. With no pets at home (yet!), Chandrima fills the gap by sketching creatures of all shapes and sizes. Her artwork in this book is as expressive as a puppy’s eyes — full of soul and mischief.

So whether you’re a lifelong dog lover or someone who’s just met their first Jonangi, The Little Book of Indian Dogs promises a journey you’ll never forget. It’s sweet. It’s soulful. And it might just lead you to your next best friend — one with a wagging tail and a very Indian heart.
