HarperCollins Children’s Books has released When Mummy Had Cancer, a tenderly written and beautifully illustrated picture book that offers comfort and understanding to families navigating the challenges of illness.

Author Priyanka Pandya Bhatt draws from her own battle with cancer to tell the story through the innocent eyes of her four-year-old daughter. “Told through the innocent eyes of my four-year-old daughter, this story is our family’s journey through the challenges of cancer,” says Bhatt. “With tender questions and evocative illustrations, I hope it offers comfort and connection to other families weathering similar storms.”

Illustrated by award-winning artist Debasmita Dasgupta, the book is visually rich and emotionally resonant. “I wanted the illustrations to feel marinated in love, grounded in nature’s quiet strength, and full of small, reassuring details that offer comfort, even in the face of fear,” Dasgupta shares.

Tina Narang, Executive Publisher – HarperCollins Children’s Books, says, “We hope this endearing story about a young girl helps everyone find their corner of peace through trying times. Thoughtfully written and supported by gorgeous illustrations, When Mummy Had Cancer encourages you to embrace vulnerability.”

The book follows a little girl’s joyful life as it is suddenly interrupted by her mother’s cancer diagnosis. Through moments of fear, sadness, and bravery, the family learns to face the illness together. With gentle honesty, it encourages children to talk about their feelings, ask questions, and find strength in the love and support of their family.
