One of India’s most respected public intellectuals, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, returns to the literary landscape with India and Her Futures, a powerful new collection of essays that delves deep into the country’s cultural, political, and intellectual tapestry. Published this month, the book is already being hailed as a seminal work capturing the complexities of India in transition.

A distinguished diplomat, scholar, and writer, Gandhi brings decades of public service and literary craftsmanship to this compilation. Through these curated essays—many originally written for national dailies and magazines—he reflects on India’s role in the global order, its fraught domestic politics, and the legacy of its foundational thinkers.

In characteristically lucid prose, Gandhi examines the evolution of Indian democracy, its institutions, and the pluralistic values that define the republic. From nuanced meditations on foreign policy to heartfelt tributes to historical figures, the essays resonate with both urgency and insight.

“This book is not just about India’s past or present,” said Gandhi at the book’s launch. “It is about what India can be—what it must be—in the face of challenges that test its core ideals.”

Gandhi’s unique vantage point—as the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalachari and as a former Governor, diplomat, and academic—adds a rare depth and credibility to his observations. Currently Distinguished Professor of History and Politics at Ashoka University, he continues to write prolifically for publications like Hindustan Times and The Telegraph.

India and Her Futures follows Gandhi’s recent works, including the memoir The Undying Light and the novel Saranam (Refuge), further establishing him as a voice of reason and reflection in a rapidly shifting socio-political landscape.

Critics have described the book as “essential reading” for those seeking to understand the India of today—and the India that lies ahead.
