HarperCollins Publishers India closes the year with a major young adult release — The Turning, the debut fantasy novel by Mumbai-based writer Shannaaya Chopra.

“Working on this book for the past five years and finally having it out in the world is a surreal feeling,” says Chopra. “I started with the concept of giving the hero villainous powers to break fantasy stereotypes, and everything else just came into place. From the first draft to now, it is absolutely unrecognisable. I could not have asked for a more supportive, enthusiastic team, and I’m beyond excited to have this book out into the world.”

The visual world of The Turning has been crafted by award-winning Bollywood Director and Designer Omung Kumar B, who created the cover, inner illustrations and bespoke design elements. “Bringing Shannaaya’s vision to life through art has been an inspiring collaboration,” he says.

Tina Narang, Executive Publisher, HarperCollins Publishers India, calls it “one of our biggest YA titles of the year and a spellbinding fantasy dripping with high drama, supernatural twists and werewolf intrigue. That it is also a debut makes it that much more exciting.”

About the book:
The Turning flips the traditional hero–villain narrative. Kiara Sharma’s life changes on a full-moon night when she transforms into a rare, red-eyed Katrol — a werewolf with powers capable of immense destruction. Drawn into Ordenia, a hidden world in the forests of Mumbai, Kiara must navigate memory orbs, ancient enemies and her own dark impulses. As danger closes in, she must decide whether to embrace the monster within or sacrifice herself to save those she loves.

About the author:
Shannaaya Chopra, 19, is a psychology student from Mumbai. A lifelong reader, she began writing early and hopes The Turning is the first of many books. She lives with her family, her dog Happy, and enjoys swimming, badminton and spending time with friends.
