The Immortal King: Yama, a new work by scholar and author Sudhamahi Regunathan, offers a striking re-interpretation of the King of Death as a wise interlocutor rather than a fearsome final judge. Drawing from dialogues in the Rig Veda, the Katha Upanishad, the Mahabharata, and extending to modern spiritual traditions including the teachings of Ramana Maharishi, the book traces Yama’s evolving conversations with humanity across millennia.

Contrary to the common image of death as silent and absolute, the book presents Yama as a patient teacher who engages seekers in profound dialogue, revealing insights on life, duty, and the secret of immortality. Rooted in rigorous scholarship yet driven by creative imagination, Regunathan portrays Yama as a compassionate guide—both of the living and the dead.

Sudhamahi Regunathan, former Vice Chancellor of Jain Vishva Bharati University, is an acclaimed author and translator. Her previous works include Vasudeva: The Wanderer Prince, Rishabhayan: The Story of the First King, and Taken Away: The Ordinary Life of a Lama (co-written with Lama Doboom Tulku, Bloomsbury India, 2024).

The Immortal King: Yama is scheduled for release on 3 February 2026.
