A new mythological novel is drawing attention among readers for bringing one of the Mahabharata’s most influential yet often overlooked figures to the centre of the story. Satyavati: The Queen Who Shaped the Destiny of the Kurus by Rupeen Popat, published by Jaico Publishing House, revisits the origins of the epic through the life and choices of Queen Satyavati.

Instead of focusing on the familiar heroes of the Kurukshetra war, the novel looks at the events that unfolded much earlier. It follows Satyavati’s journey from her life by the river as Matsyagandha to her rise as the queen of Hastinapur. Through her story, the book explores how decisions taken within the royal household shaped the future of the Kuru dynasty and eventually set the stage for the great war.

The narrative places strong emphasis on the personal and political struggles behind the dynasty’s succession. It presents the Mahabharata not only as a story of war, but also as a story of family ties, ambition and the long shadow of difficult decisions made by earlier generations.

Speaking about the book, Popat said Satyavati stands at the foundation of the Mahabharata but is rarely understood as a person in her own right. He said he wanted to look at her as a woman trying to secure stability for her family and kingdom rather than simply as a figure mentioned in the epic. According to him, the conflict remembered in the Mahabharata begins long before the battlefield, in private choices that shape the course of history.

Publishers at Jaico say readers today are increasingly interested in stories that revisit familiar epics from new perspectives. Akash Shah, Publisher at Jaico Publishing House, said that while many people know the broad events of the Mahabharata, there is curiosity about the characters who influenced those events. He added that Satyavati offers a closer look at a figure whose role is central to the epic’s unfolding.

The book also revisits the political climate of Hastinapur, including the questions of royal succession, Bhishma’s famous vow and the struggle to preserve the Kuru lineage. By focusing on these moments, the story presents the Mahabharata as a saga shaped over generations rather than a single conflict.
