Westland Books has opened pre-orders for Birth of a Nation: The Twenty-One Days That Made India, a new work of narrative history by investigative journalist and author Josy Joseph, ahead of its nationwide release on June 29, 2026.
Published under Westland’s Context imprint, the book revisits the crucial twenty-one days between July 25 and August 14, 1947, revealing how close India came to fragmentation in the final weeks before Independence and the extraordinary efforts undertaken to preserve the idea of a united nation.
Drawing on years of archival research and previously neglected historical records, Joseph reconstructs the intense political negotiations, secret manoeuvres and administrative efforts that shaped the birth of modern India. The book focuses on the newly established States Department, led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and the civil servants who worked against the clock to integrate hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union.
The narrative also highlights the resistance they faced from powerful rulers, influential advisers and competing political forces that sought alternative futures for the subcontinent, including plans by some princely states to establish diplomatic ties abroad, print their own currencies and forge independent alliances.
Speaking about the book, Joseph said his research uncovered the stories of lesser-known individuals who played a critical role in safeguarding India’s unity. “I realised that then, as now, it is the little people who shaped the fabric of this country. I wrote this book because their names deserve to be known — and because it has never felt more important to remember what this Republic was actually built on,” he said.
