Book News | Avni Doshi explores heartbreak, identity and renewal in her new novel The First House

Booker Prize-shortlisted author Avni Doshi returns with The First House, an intimate and emotionally powerful novel that examines what happens when the life you believed was secure suddenly falls apart. Published by HarperCollins India, the novel releases this July and has already earned praise from celebrated writers across the world, including Douglas Stuart, Katie Kitamura, Geetanjali Shree and Deepa Anappara.

After the international success of her debut novel Girl in White Cotton—published globally as Burnt Sugar and shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize—Doshi once again delves into the emotional complexities of family, relationships and the search for self.

The story begins with a single, life-altering moment. One evening, a husband tells his wife that he wants a divorce. Blindsided by the revelation, she is left questioning everything she believed about her marriage. As she navigates the aftermath while raising her two young daughters, she revisits memories of her relationship, uncovering the warning signs she had ignored and confronting the person she has become.

Blending psychological depth with mythology, folklore and symbolism, The First House follows a woman’s journey through grief, betrayal and self-discovery. Set over the course of one transformative summer, the novel explores how loss can become the beginning of unexpected change, asking whether breaking apart can also be a way of rebuilding.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the book, Doshi said she was drawn to the moments in life that arrive without warning. “I found myself at a midlife moment, and I saw people around me facing unexpected crises—grief, change, endings. I began to wonder what becomes possible in those moments. Can we truly transform ourselves when everything we know is suddenly taken away?” she said.

Rahul Soni, Editor-at-Large at HarperCollins India, said Doshi’s second novel carries the same distinctive voice that made her debut such a landmark work. He described The First House as a deeply affecting exploration of the end of a marriage that is unflinching in its honesty yet ultimately offers a path towards freedom and renewal.

The novel has received enthusiastic early praise. Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart called it “sharp, piercing and totally defiant of the expected,” while novelist Katie Kitamura described it as “exhilarating,” adding that Doshi is “among the finest prose stylists at work today.” International Booker Prize winner Geetanjali Shree hailed it as “a timeless tale of all women,” and Deepa Anappara praised it as “a remarkable, haunting novel.”

With The First House, Avni Doshi delivers a deeply immersive and beautifully crafted story about love, loss and the quiet resilience that emerges in the wake of heartbreak. It is a novel that speaks not only to the end of a marriage, but also to the difficult and often transformative journey of finding oneself again.
