Author Shubendra’s new historical fiction Travancore King: The Legend of Marthand Varma, inspired by the life and times of one of Kerala’s most significant rulers, is set to be released on September 11, 2026.

The 336-page novel revisits the story of Marthanda Varma and the transformation of Travancore, which emerged from the ancient kingdom of Venad. Combining historical events with fiction, the book explores the military campaigns, political rivalries and social complexities that shaped the region during the 18th century.

At the centre of the novel is Crown Prince Marthanda Varma, who is forced to seek refuge on the forested outskirts of his kingdom while assassins pursue him. The royal family finds itself weakened by powerful priests and feudal lords, while European trading powers compete for control of the lucrative spice trade.

After ascending the throne following the death of his uncle, Marthanda sets out to consolidate royal authority and transform Travancore into a powerful state. Alongside his trusted commander Ramayyan and a Dutch general, he builds a modern army and combines military strength with diplomacy to expand his kingdom.

The novel also looks at Marthanda Varma’s efforts to modernise his forces using European military techniques and centralise economic power. Against this backdrop, it explores Travancore’s encounters with European colonial powers, particularly the Dutch, as well as the growing English presence in the region.

Beyond warfare and politics, Shubendra brings into the narrative the social and religious landscape of 18th-century Kerala, including matrilineal succession, caste hierarchies, religious practices and the relationship between royal authority and local power centres.

The book draws on historical research as well as local legends and stories preserved in temples and museums. Through Marthanda Varma’s journey, it also examines larger questions around leadership, ambition, loyalty and the price of power.

Shubendra specialises in the military history of India and has a particular interest in lesser-known stories from early modern Indian history. An avid traveller, he conducts field research and studies historical military accounts while developing his works of fiction. Travancore King is his third book.
